my hope and stay

A few weeks ago, this little bit of a hymn was shared in Choice Gleanings calendar and has lingered on my heart:

His oath, His covenant, His blood,

Support me in the whelming flood;

When all around my soul gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay.

(by Edward Mote)

As we study the GOD who makes covenants with His people starting in Genesis, these few words about His covenant touched my heart deeply. What gracious provision. What steadfastness. What security!

As I consider these precious truths, it is so interesting to trace a familiar soul dialogue through today’s breakfast “psalm”:

Search me, O GOD, and know my heart; try me and know my anxieties. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)

I dwell in the High and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite one. Therefore strengthen the hands that hang down, and the feeble knees. (Isaiah 57:15, Hebrews 12:12)

In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comfort delights my soul. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. He restores my soul. (Psalm 94:19, Psalm 61:2, Psalm 23:3)

His words and His promises restore my hope! My Savior’s covenant with me is everlasting, sealed with His own blood. Nothing could steady me more.
