Awe-struck wonder.

What causes such a response from our hearts?

Awe is defined as “reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder, an element of surprise or astonishment inspired by authority, the sacred, or sublime; worship.”

Again, what elicits such a response from us?

The only true GOD—rightly acknowledging and rightly responding to the greatness of our GOD.

When we begin to grasp the true awesomeness of Almighty GOD, we gain a new appreciation for our own position before Him. He is Creator; we are the created ones. He is sovereign; we possess no power and fall on His mercy. He holds the indisputably highest standard of purity, holiness, power, wisdom, glory, and so much more.

As redeemed sinners, we simply offer due thanksgiving and praise. When we recognize that this same Almighty GOD is deeply invested in our individual lives, through one intimate encounter after another, we are overwhelmed with wonder and gratitude.

I love these few lines from “Rose of Bethlehem” by Selah that capture the wonder of a love like His, the purposely planned depths of self-sacrifice of our Savior… for us… for me!

In this week of Thanksgiving, nothing should command a more grateful exclamation from my heart and my lips than rightly acknowledging and rightly responding to the true awesomeness of our LORD and Savior. May we join with the words of this timeless hymn today, offering due honor and praise to the only One who is truly GREAT!
